Kyleigh Perot
The littlest victims...

She had one of those mischievous smiles, a mop
of blonde curly hair that sat on top of her round cherub face, and a
way of getting anyone to do anything for her.
She grew up in the care of her Nana and Papa in a small town in the
South. Regularly preparing make-believe masterpieces in her favorite
toy kitchen, Kyleigh was the picture of childhood innocence - as all
toddlers should be.
Then things went horribly wrong. Kyleigh's mother came to her parents'
house to take Kyleigh from the family she knew and loved to bring her
to Wyoming to live. She took Kyleigh in secret making a mad run-for-it,
as she knew that the people who loved and cared for Kyleigh would never
let her go. Kyleigh went from familiar faces and a loving family to
an unstable life with her teen-age mother.
Instead of family, Kyleigh now lived with strangers. Since her mother
had no home of her own, she lived with her mother, her mother's boyfriend,
and his family in their Casper, Wyoming home. Kyleigh's mother had a
history of losing her temper with the child, and outright ignoring Kyleigh's
needs if it did not suit her mood. To say the very least, Kyleigh's
Grandparents were terrified.
From their home hundreds of miles away, her grandparents made panicked
calls to child protective services; they knew Kyleigh was not safe.
They wanted her home; they wanted to watch this pretty little angel
grow up. They went as far as to notify the local child authorities (who
already knew of Kyleigh's mother's neglectful behaviors) to have them
contact Wyoming. No luck. Calls and pleas for help went unheard.
On August 16, 2000 Kyleigh Perot became yet another victim of child
abuse, and yet another victim of a system that seems to ignore the critical
cases and pursue the frivolous ones.
Kyleigh Perot was killed by Joseph Medina. He claimed that he came
home from his air traffic controlled job in order to care for Kyleigh,
who had developed a severe diaper rash. It was late at night, and she
wouldn't stop crying. Joe admitted to holding his hand over Kyleigh's
mouth and nose until "her eyes fluttered and rolled back into her
head".
August 23, 2001 Joseph Medina was sentenced for killing two-year-old
Kyleigh Perot, after pleading the charges down to manslaughter he received
a sentence of fourteen to twenty years.
At the time of his release, Kyleigh would have just been learning to
drive a car, and worrying about boys.
Damn shame.
